Tortuga is well-known by the more than 20 million annual Caribbean tourists and cruise ship passengers. Started in 1984 by Robert and Carlene Hamaty, Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes are now the #1 export of the Cayman Islands.
Rum Distillery
Tortuga Rum Company began producing its first Cayman-made rum in 2018. The company, famous for its rum cakes and liquor stores, has built new distilleries at its stores in Seven Mile Shops and West Bay. Visitors get a literal window into the production process. The distillery, behind a large glass window, can be seen from the shop and tourists can learn how rum is made and bottle their own to take home.
